Carnelian and Sterling Silver Carnelian is red-orange chalcedony, which is a crypto-crystalline variety of quartz. It is translucent to semi-transparent with a waxy luster, and has a hardness of 7. Carnelian polishes very well, and was a stone highly regarded by ancient cultures, especially the Egyptians and the Romans. Carnelian was found in a tomb at Ur that dates to the third millenium BC. Carnelian is generally cut as a cabachon, and is also carved. Carnelian is especially handsome when set in sterling silver.
